The word "Tako" means octopus and "yaki" means grilled. Takoyaki simply means grilled octopus balls. A takoyaki pan is made of cast iron with 12 half-spherical molds. The heavy iron is intended to evenly heat the takoyaki. Think of it as a Japanese version of an aebelskiver or pancake puff pan.
What is a takoyaki? It is a popular Japanese cuisine that is basically fried or baked octopus. It is similar to a Japanese dumpling made of batter, diced or octopus, tempura scraps, and green onion. Once cooked, you can drizzle ponzu sauce or okonomiyaki sauce, or even mayonnaise.
