How do I use a hand crank grain mill or grind my own grains?
Grinding your own grain is fun and easy. You will be impressed with the quality of freshly ground grains and how delicious your homemade baked breads are. You can grind your own wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley, peppercorns, other dry grains and spices.
- There are generally two types of adjustable hand crank grain mills: Burr and Stone
- It is recommended that you refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions on the use and care of your grain mill
- Assemble the mill per the instructions
- Find a suitable countertop, tabletop, or workbench to clamp your mill onto. An overhang or edge of about 1 ½ -2 inches is ideal for clamping a mill onto. A stable tabletop will ensure that the mill stays in place while you apply pressure.
- Secure and fasten the mill to the bottom of the tabletop using the screw and clamp
- Find a round or square container (wood bowl works best) and place next to the mill to capture the ground flour
- Most mills are adjustable for any desired texture from fine to coarse. You can adjust the settings of your mill per your grain mill instructions.
- Put about ¼ - 1 cup of grains into the hopper
- Hand crank your grain mill and apply pressure as you grind your grains.
- Hand cranked grain mills can generally produce about ½ cup of fine flour per minute, but that can vary with the type of mill you have.
- Look at your ground flour and determine if you need to make adjustments from coarse to fine. Adjust the settings of your mill and regrind if needed.
- It is recommended that you only grind very clean wheat and be mindful about what gets placed inside, even a small piece of kernel sized metal can drastically reduce its efficiency.
- Now you have freshly ground flour that you grain milled yourself that you can add to your favorite bread recipes and more.
