I want to make my own yogurt, where do I start?

As a beginner, it may take a little bit of time to get the hang of making your own batch of yogurt. It may take one or two batches, but once you get the hang of making your own yogurt, it will become easy and effortless. You will need to consider the following:

  • Taste - whether you like bitter or sweet and if you would like to add fruits and sweeteners
  • Texture - whether you like soft or firm yogurt
  • Type of milk - whether you will be using cow's milk, goat's milk, soy milk, nut milk, rice milk.
  • Equipment - whether you will be using a yogurt maker or the oven.

How do I choose a yogurt maker?

Not all yogurt makers are created equal. You will need to look at reviews and do some comparison shopping. We carry a variety of yogurt makers that have been highly rated and customer preferred.  One of the most important things to remember is that making your own yogurt will take some time and patience.  You will be experimenting with consistency, texture, and flavoring.  Once you get the hang of it, you will be able to make your own favorite yogurt every week just the way you like it.

How do I make my own yogurt at home?

  • Put milk, soymilk, or any type of milk into pan.
  • On low heat stir milk constantly.
  • Turn off heat before the milk reaches boiling point which is about 176˚F-185˚F
  • Let the milk cool to about 105˚F
  • While milk is cooling, prepare yogurt starter according to directions on the culture packet.
  • Pour a little bit of milk into yogurt starter to activate by thoroughly mixing until all of the powder is dissolved
  • When milk has cooled to 105˚F, mix in the activated milk into the rest of your milk and stir thoroughly
  • Pour the mixture into individual glass jars - do not put a lid on the glass jars
  • Place the yogurt containers inside your Yolife Yogurt Maker or any yogurt maker and place yogurt maker cover on top
  • Plug in your yogurt maker and set the time indicator to the time you started making your yogurt
  • Your yogurt should be ready in 8-12 hours.
  • Because it takes 8-12 hours for yogurt to be ready, you may want to incubate yogurt overnight
  • Keep yogurt maker still in a corner on the countertop.
